This sign in marble. The sign of a gone but not forgotten Florentine business.
This evocative old surviving street sign for this long lost business in the heart of Florence, announces “Antica Cascina di Dario Peruzzi.”. Translated it advertises this “old farmhouse,” which served (or sold for takeaway) milk, cream and butter and “a bar room” of coffee and milk. I wish I could time travel in for a moment or two to see what like was like inside this lost business. Dario Peruzzi, whoever you were, I remember you.

This milk, coffee and butter mix shop was open until the mid-1970s. Mrs. Annalisa del Rio worked there with her daughter Maria Luisa, a polio. The place was very run down and poorly lit.The lady used a woolen shawl that she wore on cold days. The customers were mostly local people whom she bought out of pity and to help the two women. Mrs Delfina, who has lived on the street since the 1950s, says that the two ladies actually weren’t so poor as owners of numerous properties they were. As volunteers I recently restored this sign and now the building has a much nicer appearance.
