I will never understand why lilacs are so underused in Italy. They are among my favorite blooming shrubs of all time, yet one almost never sees them here.
Recently I spotted a rare planting of them near the Horticultural Garden in Florence. I went a little bit nuts with the pictures of them, but you must remember we are under lockdown and there isn’t much stimulation in my everyday life at the moment!

I am very happy to have found your post. I love lilacs and when I read that Frances Mayes had some in her garden, I was very excited because we are planning to move to Chianti and I want lots of them. When, would you say, is the peak blooming season for them? I am planning our next trip in the spring and I want to coordinate their season with that of the irises in Firenze.
Depends on micro climate of where you settle. I’d contact the local horticultural society in the region you desire and ask them. Buona fortuna!
