I broke my bed today.

I wish I were kidding. And I wish it were for reasons other than I had to move it to find something that went flying under the bed when I dropped it. And I wish that something was more exciting to report than it actually is.

When I moved the bed, one of the legs fell off the frame.  And despite my (completely absent) mechanical ability and engineering genius, I can’t fix the leg even though I can see what went wrong.  I can’t lift the frame for starters. And so that leaves me with 3 legs holding the springs and mattress up and one corner failing.  My mattress now moves like a teeter totter.  So, I’m sleeping on the couch from now until later.

It is definitely at times like this that you need your partner. ;-))

High racial tension on a hot day

It was hot here in Torino again today.  Of course that isn’t news: it’s summer after all.  After the heat of the mid-afternoon had started to dissipate, I went for a very long walk through the leafy paths that meander along the Po River and through an expansive park near my apartment, The Valentino Park.  All sorts of people were enjoying the late afternoon.  What lawns exist were crunchy brown from lack of rain and an abundance of pedestrian traffic. I saw a man fishing in the Po and people from age 6 months to 100 taking in the afternoon and leafy surroundings.

However, it wasn’t all peaceful.

I spent last winter living in Tuscany and one of the first things I noticed was the large number of African immigrants hawking selfie sticks and other cheap goods in and around Florence in particular.  The newspapers and international magazines are full of stories detailing the desperate conditions in Africa that induce the poor immigrants to go to hell and back to migrate here.

This is not the place to detail Italian/African race relations and I am obviously no authority.  But the heat produced an angry argument today between four men in their twenties or thirties in Valentino park.  Unfortunately, I can sense tension like a seasoned pro; I actually am one, sad to say.  I felt the tension between these four young men long before I was close enough as a passerby to hear the words.

I didn’t linger long enough in the vicinity of the arguing men to find out exactly what the topic of disagreement was: but it was clear that it was territorial and the Italian and African men were screaming at each other, arms dangling at their sides.  All parties had their chests plumped up and were chest butting each other; the two main protagonists were an Italian and an African and the other two men were acting like consiglieres.

Two things jumped out at me as I hurriedly walked away.  #1 I was rushing away because if this were an argument in the United States, I have no doubt a gun would have been pulled and shots fired.  A very sad, but true, statement about my home country.

#2 The men were fighting in English.  The African men didn’t speak English perfectly and neither did the Italians.  But it was their common language.

Nervous people all around kept glancing at and then averting their eyes from the scene.  As a tourist and a female, I felt the best thing for me to do was get the hell out of dodge.  But I keep thinking about it and my heart does go out to the immigrants. What a world, what a world.

Mamma mia said there’d be days like this!

I’ve had a pretty rough week aside from the heat. Becoming an expatriate is a lot harder than I thought and I am weary and worn.

Part of my dilemma last night was: do I want to let the quiet unmoving still hot air into my apartment with the risk of bats I’ve noticed flying around the treetops?  I opted not and went to bed with no bats and sweltered through the night.  Tonight I think I’ll be inviting the bats in, on the condition they bring some cooler air.

On the plus side, I went to the coffee lab near Via Roma today and had the most perfect cappuchino known to man.  It was a marvel and I should have taken pictures, but there is no picture than can give you a guage of foamy perfection and roasted coffee happiness.  It is such a shame because if there were these things, life would be even fuller.

Maybe if the weather turns my way I can get back up on the horse. Lord knows there are many equestrian monuments throughout Torino, so I can have my choice of steeds but then I’ll probably get arrested.

Like maybe I could climb up on this one? IMG_3718

IMG_3719 I think I could get up there. Can you see it now?  Ha ha!

And then, I get a daily dose of shit from my landlord about how much internet I use. is just the start.

Just keepin it real people.  Life isn’t a cabaret alle questo momento.

Beauty alert!

Your faithful beauty detective is back on the beat after a 4 month hiatus as she got her papers (more or less, mostly less) in order to return a italia!  And not a moment too soon because there is some serious beauty happening in northern Italy!

Have you spent any time fretting about what is to become of the famed Italian passamanerie now that we are living in the 21st century?

No, you haven’t?

You mean it’s just me?

Well, regardless, I am undeterred and I’ve got great news for all lovers of a good trim shop everywhere.

As spotted today, Italian artisans have obviously regrouped and adapted their designs for the modern connoisseur.  And not a moment too soon if you ask me!

As clothing has become more deconstructed so, it turns out, has cutting edge trim!

Take these modern twists on linen drapery fabric available by the meter.  In one sample, not only are various shades of chartreuse loosely stitched in various widths to the linen, but the very trendy color of gray is also to be found sewn onto a background of beige linen. In a third design, 4 warm shades of terracotta are stitched to the linen, followed again by a row of hot chartreuse.  All three applications are very pretty and feel quite modern.

Also, not to be left in the dust bin, are updated tassels.  What, you might have been worrying, can be done to modernize the traditional tassel?

IMG_4746

Well, not to worry, because as it turns out, just by reducing the number of hues contained in a tassel and then simplifying the knot, a modernized profile is achieved.  And then, as if to offset the simplicity of the knot, how about adding a ceramic button decorated with a graphic sun design in simple black and white?

Done!  You’ve got yourself a modern tassel!  And you thought tassels were so 20th century!

IMG_4746

Another modern approach to the tassel is to keep the knot a simple monochromatic creation.

IMG_4747

It turns out that a slate gray is all that is needed to produce a solid yet lovely tassel, topped by a smooth knot of a contrasting tan color. Add a squat disk covered in the same gray as the tassel and top it with yet another elongated yet smaller hit of tan, attached the braided gray cord, and voila! you’ve got yourself a thoroughly modern tassel!  Just what you have been waiting for!

You could then throw a rectangular pillow, decorated with profiles of 20th-century apothecary artifacts, mainly in black and white but with an occasional understated hit of color, onto your sofa or divan and you have a tres chic, and very modern, salon!

Caffe freddo, per favore!

Image result for iced coffee

I know for a fact that I wouldn’t have survived the current heat wave without iced coffee.  It’s iced coffee, all day long.

What I didn’t know until today is that some barristas here add a shot of alcohol to the mixture.  I wondered why I felt so good after consuming this lovely light brown beverage!  Cin cin!
