Back to school! Italian lessons 101.

So, two days ago I became a student again.  To learn to speak Italian. Ayyyyyyyy! Madonna!

My school is about a 10 minute walk from my apartment.  I go for 4 hours a day, 5 days a week, for two weeks.  Then I see if I think it is worthwhile and can either enroll in another two week course or wing it in Florence and hope for the best.  In any case, I’ll be hoping for the best!

I think it would be fun to enroll in a course on how to speak like an Italian with your hands.  Lord knows Italians have very verbal hands!  It is such fun to surreptitiously watch them talk to one another. Even if I don’t understand what all the words are, I can usually pick up the drift of the conversation from a few words and all the gestures.

Why do I do all this, expend all this energy, for Italy?  It’s simple really.  I drew you a picture.

Sogni d’oro!! Dreams of gold!

I believe it has been firmly established among all cognoscenti that Italian is one of the world’s most musical, most lovely to the ears, most delightful languages to listen to.

There are certain expressions within Italian that are beautiful beyond belief (alliteration alert), and sogni d’oro is one of these for me.  In fact, it may be my favorite.

When you are saying goodnight to someone you love you wish them sogni d’oro, which is essentially the same things as “sweet dreams” in English.

I’d never suggest any of my own imagery for anyone else’s dreams; dreaming is way too personal for any such folly.

But here are some golden backgrounds for you to think of next time you have trouble sleeping.

Just remember to bid yourself sogni d’oro!

Sweet dreaming!

Buona notte e sogni d’oro!

Is Italian really the world’s sexiest accent? uh……yeah, it really is! Vero!

Italian: The World’s Sexiest Accent?

Italian is the world’s sexiest accent, according to a poll conducted by CNN.
There are an estimated 7,000 languages on earth; CNN came up with 13 which “sound sexiest to native-English speakers” by using, admittedly, an unscientific method: asking around the office. They then compiled a list where Italian ranked first, before French and Spanish, second and third respectively.
This is why Italian is the sexiest, as described by CNN:
“Raw, unfiltered, the Italian accent is a vowelgasm that reflects the spectrum of Italic experience: the fire of its bellicose beginnings … the romance of the Renaissance … the dysfunction of anything resembling a government since Caesar.
Insatiable, predatory and possessive, this is sex as a second language.
Sounds like: A Ferrari saxophone.”

Va bene, let’s have one more look at Marcello:

Ah, Marcello, Marcello…ti amo per sempre!
